Is AFK gaming costing the earth?
GW=Global Warming?
Possibly.
With a sharp trend in AFK GW gaming, players standing overnight on rings in the boardwalk, not so long ago LB farming with the Rez glitch and of course the greatest single AFK type of play (aside from leeches in AB ) is pre-searing death leveling trying to acquire the LDOA title.
This title is super-cool make no mistake about it - but - its 80% AFK - leaving your PC ON at times it would otherwise be OFF - even putting the monitor on stand-by makes little difference!!!

Research it yourself.........you will be amazed at the carbon emissions from just a few thousand people around the world doing this.
Anet could do something about this - maybe introducing some more missions into pre (possibly unbalancing the low level post searing so maybe not) or even introducing hard mode for players who have already completed the game.
And maybe we can do our bit by unplugging our monitors or checking on the energy efficiency of the next PC you buy.
Anyway food for thought - BTW I am not some GREEN ECO WARRIOR - simply a concerned DAD (and a Ranger) who wants my kids to grow up in a world closer to pre-searing than post!!!
have fun.........

Did you make that post with the lights on? That's a waste of electricity; use windows!
Heating is also a waste; it's Summer! Are you wasting electricity there too?
You are being incredibly overdramatic...

Most people would have their computers on regardless. The servers to run an mmo being powered 24/7 and the internet infrastructure required to allow mmos to function uses far more power than a bunch of users being afk. And yeah melodrama ftl.
If you're really concerned about global warming and electricity usage go lobby for co2 scrubbers for all coal fired power plants as that would actually make a difference.

Oh no!
The Global Warming/Carbon Footprint crap has hit guru now theres no escape!!!
I live in Eurpoe and that has less emissions per year than USA or China so i really don't care until China or USA start giving a crap as anything we do is undone by them
Its like 80% total caused by USA and Asia so anything i do is so small i may aswell not bother, which i don't

yknow a few years ago they were saying there was a problem because of a hole in the ozone layer. now theres a problem because of the ozone itself. sorry friend, but if you listen to every "scientific" trend that comes along, you're pretty much damned no matter what you do.

Wow Global Warming no joke people. This is serious and effects everyone. It is inevitable, but it can be slowed if everyone pitches in.
We have the energy saving bulbs (everyone should get these btw.). Also, I never picked up the AFK syndrom (thank god) if I'm done on my comp, I shut it off.
Be green and turn off the machine

I don't really care about leaving my computer on to farm titles, I don't do it anyways. But I agree, maybe not everyone is a dad on this forums, but when I see my electricity bill, I feel like punching something or someone. Now I'm not saying this is the case for everyone, but my computer being open atleast 8 hours a day is playing a major part, and I live in Quebec, electricity for us is very cheap!

Believe it or not, pc power consumption on a lot of chips are going down not up.The only exception lately has been the graphics card.
And if you really want something done, have power companies build green energy power plants. That way, bad emissions are cut completely.

Yes, but will your kids or grand kids? Hopefully if we are all lucky you won't reproduce but, in case you do you might want to think about someone besides yourself.
Just a thought.

Leaving a PC on 24/7 vs shutting off when not in use has good/bad points either way. From a power usage/enviromental viewpoint, shutting it off when not in use is obviously cheaper and more enviromentally friendly. If its off, its using very little power(yes, it is still using some power even when shutdown).
For the PC's "health", leaving it on 24/7 might be the better option. The initial power up is one of the more stressful times for the PC's hardware. And going from a cold start to running, or vice versa, puts hardware through some large temperature changes. Although running 24/7 would have an impact on the lifespan of mechanical parts like hard drive motors. I would rather have a drive or fan fail, than have to replace a $500+ video card or CPU.
I've had several PC's that went 3-4 years+ of nearly constant uptime, and only had failures in the previously mentioned mechanical parts (which were replaced easily and with little cost). My only concern with leaving a PC on all the time would be a higher chance of overheating damage to hotter running parts like the CPU. This shouldn't be an issue for any reasonably well built PC unless its in a very hot room. However, I have found that many PCs from the more popular companies have less than ideal (sometimes rather pathetic) cooling that could easily overheat.

Yea
They discover AIDS - it'll wipe us out
Some people get SARS - it'll kill us all
And what happened to Avian Influenza ?? Wasn't that supposed to wipe out 80% of us last in early spring?
O well we all die eventually, It's how you live not how long (back to GW for 8 hours )

Global warming is a huge conspiracy to make money for environmentalists and the weather channel. People in this thread are geniuses.
more please
Also - the largest AFK type of play is botting, so stopping that would make more difference than stopping AFK titles.

If global warming was really caused by humans, we had better get all the humans off of Mars also. Wait, there aren't humans on Mars, just a couple robots, and Mars' icecaps are shrinking as well....hmmm.......

First of all If, global warming was real (which it isn't and I have explained it to my girlfriend many times) it would still be stupid to complain about what the gw population is doing to contribute to it on a forum with a bunch of guild wars players. Expect a major flaming. Global warming is the biggest joke since the start of the guild wars economy and I care about it as much as Barry Bonds breaking Hank Aaron's Homerun record, oh wait I couldn't give a damn about it.
